There was a time in the error coin hobby when the grade of the actual coin made very little difference in the price of the error. It was the scarcity of the actual error that determined the dollar value! example: a double struck Buffalo nickel would cost the same whether it was circulated or BU.. Hard to believe! but true.

   As the hobby evolved and greater number of collectors, dealers and other interested parties became involved. many realized there was a difference between a circulated error and a Mint State error coin. Hence the involment of 3rd party grading services who have been grading and certifing coins for nearly two decades.

    Today, an error coins Grade, Eye- Appeal, and rarity are all important factors in an error coins price. Also the particular 3rd party grading service will have a determining factor on the error coins price. The more respectable and trusted the service! the more marketable and easier to sell the error coin. In our book the 2 top companies for error coins are NGC and PCGS. There are many others around, some are pretty good, but many are just not worth the experience.
